I never bought any with real cash, usually I used some virtual currency (mainly in promotion forums) and bought ads for a week or two. I think it may help a lot if you do some research on where to put your ads up so that you can maximize your profits.

I have bought quite a few ads for this website but most people just visit and do not sign up which is a bummer, but hoping some day I will get a bunch of people to sign up.

I have never spent money on ads for my sites and perhaps that's why none of them have gotten very big or successful.
Purchasing ads is definitely a good way of bringing traffic to your site given you purchase the right ads, that's the hardest part.

I agree if you buy ads at random you wont get anything out f it , I mean after all you have to find your target audience.

I have never heard of StumbleUpon. I may have to test that one. But I have spent over $30.00 so far just on advertising. But even though no one is signing up, at least I continue to get unique IP visitors to the site. That way I know the people who are signed up and discussing/advertising will receive free traffic, and views to their discussions.

Honestly,I wouldn't recommend buying ads either except for virtual money

Paid advertising is part of success advertising. Sometimes, you need to start with paid one to boost free methods because you already built your brand awareness.
I will not restrict the use of paid advertising, i will just suggest someone to advertise at the right place to get a good return on investment!
