Haven't seen one of these in a little while.
I've been on kind of an AC kick since Christmas when I finally got a computer that could reliably run AC3, which I somewhat rushed through to get to Black Flag so it's been on my mind a lot lately.
I know the whole series has had mixed feelings and some of the newer changes have been somewhat controversial, but I just can't help getting a kick out of this particular franchise. I just have a lot of fun with each of the games, I like the gameplay (and even some of the really gimmicky stuff they've done,) and while it can be rather full of itself I actually really enjoy some of the characters and storylines throughout the series. I'd say it's one of my guilty pleasures, only I don't feel all that guilty about it.
Had all of the games on consoles when they came out originally and have been slowly adding them to my Steam library whenever there's a good sale and I've got money to burn (they just look a lot prettier on my PC,) so now that I've completed the story in Black Flag I've decided to see about starting over from the first game and working my way back up, at least as a pallet cleanser to some of other games in my current backlog. Some of the overarching plot had got really... let's say convoluted, so working my way through the plot in order without years-long gaps might help me figure things out a bit more.
Overall, the games just appeal to the history buff in me. I like the primary conceit of the games, I think that's an interesting way of weaving game logic into the fabric of the narrative. And I actually read (almost) all of the little blurbs and data entries that pop up as you play. I like that they generally put some work into researching these periods. I also find the games very "immersive" I guess you could say.
When AC2 came out, I happened to have a solid couple of weeks with nothing but free time. My wife was out of town for a while, my job wasn't particularly demanding; so I actually had nothing but time on my hands and could really take my time with the game. I started... "roleplaying" Ezio, basically. Walking through the city streets, they've put a lot of attention to making it "feel" like maybe that's what Renaissance-era Italy would be like. Rather than running around on the rooftops running from mission to mission I actually started just taking my time and walking everywhere (I figured an Assassin "realistically" would probably spend most of their time just blending in and taking their time.) It was actually quite a nice experience, personally, to approach the game that way. More like how I would play and Elder Scrolls game than a straight-up action game.
That's still probably my favorite in the series. Now I've been playing AC1 I kind of see some of it's flaws. The voice-acting for Altair is just... not only out of place (especially as the only guy without an ostensibly suitable accent,) but kind of abysmally-performed, as well. The combat's kind of too finicky, too. I never really got the hang of it in AC1, and that last fight at the end of the game originally took me like three days to power through.
AC2 I just loved. I got a kick out of Ezio, and one thing I'll say for the series is it's nice seeing at least even an attempt at real character development in a videogame. A lot of it is rather cliched at times, but it's nice to see even an effort. Black Flag I actually got somewhat emotional towards the end, I kind of started to feel for the main character in that one.
Anyway I could go on, but that's (more than) enough for an opening post I suppose.
Anyone else been playing these games lately? Have any particular thoughts about them one way or another?
